Dubbed the “most depressing day of the year” in 2021 this somber landmark feels even bluer thanks to the stress and anxiety brought on by COVID-19.  

Just because it’s the moodiest Monday of the year doesn’t mean you have to feel down. To help you beat the blues we’ve put together five tips to help you boost your mental wellbeing today or any other day of the year.

Get outside

It may sound obvious, but one of the reasons why we tend to feel bluer at this time of the year is the weather. The shorter days and lack of sunlight can play havoc with our bodies’ internal clocks, which cause us to feel out of sync.  

That means it’s never been more important to get outside and enjoy some fresh air. Even if it’s just for a few minutes each day, getting outdoors can have a real impact on our overall wellbeing.

Of course, it sounds great in theory, but we know it can be hard to get outside during the dark and dreary months of winter. Get moving

Get some sleep

We’re supposed to sleep between seven and nine hours per night, but many of us fall well short of that number. But did you know that failing to get enough shuteye won’t just leave you feeling tired, it can also have an impact on your wellbeing too? 

You see a lack of sleep can cause mood swings, irrationality, inability to focus and learn, loss of positivity, and even anxiety. On the flip side, making sure we get enough rest gives our brains a chance to recuperate and recharge, preventing those negative impacts. So one simple hack to help you boost your wellbeing is to go to bed earlier and wake up later. Even something as simple as an extra hour or two in bed can make the world of difference.
